The excitement was building at Round Table fireworks on Saturday evening at Henley Rugby club with the Guy competition being judged and the bonfire being lit by the Mayor, Councillor Lorraine Hillier before she started a countdown for the fireworks.  Unfortunately after a 20 minute delay, George Thomas, Chair of the Round Table made an announcement to the crowd that there would be no firework display due to a computer problem with the firing system.

On social media later the Round Table made this statement “The volunteers of Henley Round Table are deeply disappointed and sorry that the firework display did not happen. Hours and hours go into the organisation on a voluntary basis and profits are for local charities. The event has been running for 42 years and this has never happened before. Unfortunately, we were let down by the computer firing system. In case you missed the announcement, next year’s event will free for all those who attended today. Profits from today’s event will go towards a new minibus for the Bishopswood Special School and other local charities.”

Families did though enjoy the music provided by local DJ, The Stepper, aka Ross Duncan who goes to Henley College, hot dogs and mulled wine from Henley Rotary Club, a hog roast, and the Round Table beer tent.  The event was sponsored again this year by Wilkins of Henley who helped build the bonfire.

The Guy competition was won by Valley Road School which was made by Year 6 children.  They will receive a cheque for £250.

It was such a shame there was no display for everyone; both the organisers and the audience, for what is normally such a fantastic local event.  These things do happen though in our computer age – the National Lottery had a technical problem too on Saturday night.
