Have Your Say – HGVs Damaging My House

Dear Sirs,

I would like to write in to support the great work that Amanda Chumas is doing in raising the awareness around the increasing numbers of HGVs using Henley as a cut through route.  Living in the Old Basketmakers Arms on Gravel Hill, I am in a fairly precarious position of having my property literally sticking out into the road.  In the past in fact a car has gone into the house.  I have had multiple damage to the grade two listed building from HGVs driving up the road.  Including recently my drainpipe being knocked off the building.  With my sofa sitting against the wall to the road, it is petrifying sometimes seeing the size of vehicle coming up the road with very little clearance and feeling the vibration and damage it is doing to the building as they pass.  With the very narrow path and road at the point, I feel it is only a matter of time until more serious damage is done to either the property or to a pedestrian walking by.  As there has already been many times in the town.

I am all for supporting necessary deliveries into the town.  However feel that Amanda is doing a tremendous job of laying out a plan to deter those unnecessary lorries cutting through Henley as a short cut.  I wholeheartedly support the work she is doing and would ask your readers to take a look at her petition – “To obtain Traffic Regulation Order to Ban HGVs in Henley-on-Thames”) and encourage other Henley residents to consider providing their support and vote of confidence too.

Yours sincerely,

Selina Craig
