Three New Cycle Routes Proposed
Councillors Stefan Gawrysiak and Laurence Plant have reviewed three new cycle routes which they have proposed to the Town Council’s Transport Strategy Committee to be viable.
The three routes are:
Route 1 – From Tesco to the Fair Mile via Vicarage Road, Church Street, Henley College, Hop Gardens, Abrahams estate and Freeman’s Meadow
Route 2 – From Tesco to Gillotts Corner via Peppard Lane bridlepath to down Valley Road to Henley College (linking with route 1)
Route 3 – Path behind the Invesco building through to Station Road
Members of the committee commented that the Church Road junction with Greys Road would need careful consideration to make it suitable for cyclists, and that the gravel path on Church Road after Trinity School often diverted cyclists to use the footpath instead of the cycleway.
It was suggested that the path could be marked with small circular signs and road markings with the aim of making the paths safer and more welcoming for cyclists.
It was agreed that Councillors Gawrysiak and Plant would discuss the paths, safety concerns and signs with officers at Oxfordshire County Council and come back to the Committee at the next meeting.
As a very regular cyclist I welcome this. However, how does this physically work? E.g. cycling past Henley College up and down Deanfield Avenue, there’s no room for cycle lanes, and the coaches have never respected the double yellow lines pre and during pick up, so wholly unenforceable. Nice idea . Sort the abusive coach drivers out and it might work.
Yes the gravel path in Church Road is a particular hazard which should be addressed00
IMO the biggest need is a safe cycle route from Henley to Shiplake. More specifically to allow safe route for cycles and pedestrians from the new developments at Thames Farm to henley.
There is sufficient space at the existing road margins and elsewhere to enable this.
