New Musical Director, Alex for Henley Youth Choir

Henley Youth Choir has recruited a new Musical Director, Alex Haigh, who started last week.  Alex has been a professional choral and opera singer for 12 years and is excited by the opportunity to coach young people and help them develop.

Alex grew up in Henley and has previously facilitated multiple education projects in partnership with the Henley Educational Trust. He said: “When the position with Henley Youth Choir came up, I jumped at the chance!” As a professional singer, Alex has intensive working knowledge of vocal development and techniques to get the best out of choirs he works with.

To budding singers Alex has the following message. “We welcome everyone, no experience necessary, so if you’re a seasoned pro or someone willing to give us a go, I promise you’ll have fun. You don’t need to read music either, as lots of our learning is done together as a group! Come for one session, or a whole term and we’ll make some amazing music, all together. See you there!”

Some of the this term’s songs include Earth by Michael Jackson (Junior), Fireflies by Owl City, Ring in the season from Olaf’s Frozen Adventure (Junior) and Light in the Hallway (Senior).

Two Seniors’ parents who have returned after the summer break said, “Thought it was fun and likes the music.” and “Really enjoyed last night; she tells me there is a really good vibe in the room. Will always remember HYC, she has been with you half her life!”

HYC rehearsals are on Thursdays at d:two, Market Place, Henley, 5.30-6.15pm for Juniors (7-11 yr olds) and 6.15-7pm for Seniors (12-17 yr olds). Registration forms can be found via the link http://www.henleychoralsociety.org.uk/youth-choirs/. The first rehearsal session can be taken free with no obligation, to see how it goes. We have a bursary scheme in place; download the Bursary Application Form for more information or contact Fi on fi.harding@sky.com or 07947 658252.

HYC loves to perform; forthcoming performances will include the Henley Festival’s Family Day, the Big Green Week (23 September) the Henley Choral Society’s Christmas Concert, Henley Town’s Christmas Festival. HYC sings a varied repertoire from Bach to Beyonce. Singing in a choir can develop skills, confidence, and a love of group-singing that lasts a lifetime.
