Comets Orbiting Jubilee Park

Fittingly, Jubilee Park was the venue for AFC Henley Hurricanes to take their first steps into Division A. Their previous two fixtures had been cancelled, most recently due to a frozen pitch last weekend. However the morning was cold, dry but not frosty and so the game was on.

The Comets started brightly, and had quickly forced goalkeeper Harrison into a save. Having survived the early scare, the Hurricanes asserted themselves. The game was being played in midfield, and the Hurricanes were working hard to create opportunities. Will L’s shot hit the post. The Comets were a constant threat, though, and were pacy going forward. Jack T made a block to cut out one attack. The Hurricanes were being forced onto the defensive, and the pressure told when the Comets scored from a well taken corner.

The Hurricanes were trying hard to push forward, Zico persevering up front whilst captain Shiva kept the ball determinedly on the left. Oscar crossed the ball across the face of the goal but nobody was there to convert. The Comets had most of the possession, forcing the Hurricanes to search for chances. Jack C and Dom worked the ball down the right. The first half ended with a great move from two Comets strikers, passing the ball between them with only Jack T to keep them at bay.

The half-time switch of ends meant that the Comets were coming down the slight slope at Jubilee Park. The Comets had the bulk of the possession but the Hurricanes worked hard in defence to keep them at bay. Shiva made an important tackle, and man-of-the-match Harrison made a superb fingertip save to thwart a powerful shot from outside the box. At the other end Will L and Oscar worked well together on the left, whilst Jack T’s long shot was only narrowly off target.

The Hurricanes showed their mettle in persevering until the end of the game. Their next league fixture sees them back on the road next weekend.
