Chargers Spark Against Hurricanes

AFC Henley Hurricanes U11s gave their all in a league match against a skilful Binfield Chargers team.

A deceptively cold morning saw the AFC Henley Hurricanes U11s and their frostbitten parents at Binfield for a league match. The Hurricanes had visited Binfield FC’s impressive home one before in a previous age group, with multiple pitches and a grandstand of seating next to one of the larger ones.
The game very quickly came to life. The Chargers were the first to power up, and had the first shot. The Hurricanes responded by working the ball down the pitch, but the Chargers were soon attacking again. They forced a string of corners which the Hurricanes defended robustly.

The Hurricanes began to find their feet. Defender Dominic and goalkeeper Harrison communicated well to organise the defence. Harrison’s long ball out found Nicholas in midfield, and the Hurricanes worked the ball forward from there. Oscar put a great ball in from the right wing, but it could not be converted. Dominic’s headed attempt from Jack C’s corner was narrowly wide across the face of goal.

At times the Hurricanes passing clicked and solid progress was made. Will G won the ball in defence, finding the midfield where Nicholas and captain Shiva worked it forward to Will L, Oscar and Jack C.

The Chargers made a quick break. Will G was able to slow the charge, and Harrison saved the shot which eventually came. Suddenly, the Chargers had found their passing game, making electrifying progress down the pitch. They seized an opportunity when they outnumbered the defenders to fire an unstoppable shot into the top corner.

After the restart, the game became more open with both teams looking to secure an advantage. The Chargers still looked to attack, and were especially penetrative on the left. Dominic and Nicholas had to work hard to keep them at bay. The Hurricanes also tried to move the ball forward, Zico and Oscar attacking and Will L’s shot was just over. Another attack saw Jack C dribble the ball about half the length of the pitch with most of the Chargers in pursuit! The half ended with Zico barrelling down the left side at pace.

The Chargers began the second half the most strongly, forcing the Hurricanes to defend. Will L made an important tackle, and man-of-the-match Dominic a block, combining well with Nicholas. Harrison calmly caught the ball from a long chipped attempt.

The Hurricanes were finding it hard to get past the Chargers and create chances, although to their credit they didn’t give up. Zico ran the ball down the left, but was well tackled by the Chargers defence. Oscar showed his skill on several occasions. He beat two defenders to take the ball down the right. His powerful shot was well saved by the Chargers keeper.

The game ended with a brighter period for the Hurricanes. Will G and Oscar were reunited in attack with Luca and Shiva taking more defensive roles. Overall the Hurricanes played well against a skilful Chargers team. Next weekend brings another tough away game in the league.
