Henley Army Cadets Visit Fire Station
Recently, the Henley Army Cadets visited Henley Fire Station. The night consisted of 4 rotating stands: looking at different equipment in the fire engine, RTC (road traffic collision) equipment, uniform the firefighters wear, and a talk about fire safety. The Cadets really enjoyed the night, with some even being inspired to become firefighters in the future!
Looking at RTC equipment was the highlight of the evening for many of the Cadets. The Cadets had the opportunity to look at stabilising equipment, glass breakers, entry tools like the Halligan bar, and different cutters and spreaders like the ‘Jaws of Life’.
The Cadets spent part of the night in a hot room where the firefighter’s uniform is stored. Some of them got to try on the kit, including a protective helmet and breathing apparatus including an oxygen tank. The Cadets found out that the kit can withstand a whopping 600°C, and how quickly the firefighters must be able to change into the heavy equipment.
A highly important part of the evening was the talk about fire safety. The Cadets got to hear first-hand from firefighters not what to do. They also heard stories from the firefighters about personal situations they’ve been in, and the Cadets learnt about the 4 things the fire service deals with: road traffic collisions, fires, animal rescue and water rescue.
All in all, not only was the night great fun, but it was also important to count towards their Cadet in the Community subject. The Cadets were very grateful to all the firefighters for giving up their time to provide such great insight into the fire service. A massive thank you to the Henley Fire Station team!
The Army Cadet Force is a national youth organisation sponsored and supported by the Ministry of Defence for 12 to 18-year olds; Army Cadets provides a challenging and varied syllabus based on military themes. Henley Army Cadet Force parade every Wednesday from 1900 to 2130 at The Drill Hall on Friday Street and are currently looking for new Cadets and Adult Volunteers, feel free to come along and experience something new.
