Mixed Week for Henley Bowling Club
On Tuesday 31st May, Henley visited Palmer Park in a mixed 4 triples friendly match. The scores were 29-27 to Henley after 9 ends, but after a short break due to heavy rain, no excuse, the home side picked up the pace and ran out winners 65-55, winning on three rinks and drawing on one. Peter Borsberry with Simon Hatcher and Joan Edwards saved a complete whitewash by picking up 1 on the final end to draw 17-17, having been 6 down after fourteen ends. Gill Robins with Kevin Browne and John Wilkinson were leading by 1 on the final end only to drop 3 to go down 14-16. Andy Scott with Jeanie Davies and Nigel Bridges were level after seventeen ends, only to drop 1 going down 13-14. Barrie Davies with Maurice Robins and Brian Duddy started off slowly, picked up to 11-13 after fifteen ends but couldn’t maintain their momentum to go down 11-18.
On Wednesday 1st June Henley entertained Maidenhead Thicket in a friendly 5 mixed triples match, winning on three and losing on two. Henley were well up at the halfway stage running out winners 91-58. Peter Borsberry with Jim Turner and John Wilkinson were always in control win a convincing win 31-7. Barrie Davies with Joan Edwards and Maurice Hill started strongly, winning by 24-12. Norman Daniells with Peter Watkins and Brian Duddy also started strongly, winning by 19-9. Simon Hatcher with Jeanie Davies and John Cross were 2 up after fifteen ends, dropped a 6, pulled back 3 to go down by one shot 15-16. Andy Scott with Maurice Robins and Sally Daniells struggled from the start and were 5 down after seven ends, 2 up after fourteen ends but fell away to go down 12-14.
On Friday 3rd June, after the usual weekly Spoon Drive competition, the Club celebrated the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee with a BBQ. This was the first chance the Club had managed a social gathering of this type since the Covid lockdown and 33 members enjoyed a lovely evening of food and drink with the majority of the food being prepared by our hard working Chair, Sally Daniells. Many other members contributed bowls of salad and the like, including a special celebration cake by member Brian Duddy. Green keeper Maurice Robins, with plenty of assistance from Nigel Bridges, spent their time over the hot coals and the evening concluded with heartening rendition of the national anthem led by Sally.
