AFC Henley Hurricanes U11s played their final game in the summer league against Burghfield U11s at Cintra Park.
The Hurricanes’ last appearance at Cintra Park was an early fixture. Again the weather was warm and sunny, with the now-expected cooling breeze. The lack of rain meant the pitch was hard and cracked. The opposition were Burghfield FC, who had a royal blue kit, whilst the Hurricanes were in their usual yellow.
The Hurricanes started the most brightly. Dominic, Casper and Jack C got the Hurricanes passing game going. Will L’s early shot went into the side netting. Oscar hit his stride on the right, winning a corner.
Burghfield were also pushing for a goal. Their forwards were quick and it wasn’t long before they hit the bar. This was followed up with a long shot, which goalkeeper Will G had under control.
Burghfield’s goalkeeper was in action too, denying Oscar, palming away a powerful shot. Jack C’s well-taken corner was chipped narrowly over the bar by Dominic. This was the start of a stronger period for the Hurricanes, with shots for Oscar, Ed, Will L and Dominic. The half ended with the ball being rescued from the hedge following a defensive clearance.
The second half began with Burghfield playing brightly, looking to create that scoring opportunity. However their goalkeeper was soon back in action. Charlie’s header from Dominic’s long throw-in was tipped wide.
Jack C produced another incisive corner. Dominic met the ball at the edge of the box, and chipped it neatly into the top corner of the goal. The Hurricanes were passing the ball well now, Ed, Casper and Jack C working well together on the right. Charlie’s shot under pressure from the defence found the side netting whilst Ed drew a fine one-handed save.
Burghfield were still in the game. As well as defending stubbornly, and sometimes in numbers, they were also seeking opportunities to attack. They swarmed forward to win a corner, but new goalkeeper Casper had it under control. Moments later, Casper was back in action, making a fingertip save to a powerful Burghfield shot.
The Hurricanes ended the game most strongly, with shots for Jack C, Ed, Will G and man-of-the-match Dominic.
The players, coaches and parents now take a well-earned summer break to recharge for the start of the new season in September.
