Leander Athletes Part of Table Topping World Championship GB Team

The GB rowing team topped the table in last weekend’s World Championships in Racice in the Czech Republic with Leander athletes winning 6 gold, 3 silver and 4 bronze medals.

Heidi Long, Sam Redgrave and Rowman Mckellar won gold by 2 seconds in the Women’s Four. Samantha said the crew had built from their win at the European Championships in Munich, adding: “We came off of Europeans knowing that we were doing a good job but we still had stuff to work on, and we just got our heads down and trained hard at camp for over a month. It’s really paid off, we said what we were going to do, and I think that’s the one thing we’ve done so well this year is when we’ve said we were going to do something we really commit.”

Emily Ford and Esme Both won silver in the Women’s Pair and the Women’s Quad of Leander rowers, Georgie Brayshaw, Lola Anderson and Jessica Leyden came third to win a bronze medal. Georgie is new to the senior squad this year and said she was excited about what lay ahead: “We’re going to keep working and we’re going to be up there. Keep your eyes on us!”

Leander rowers Sholto Carnegie and Tom Ford were in the winning Men’s Eight crew. The eight concluded their unbeaten season with World Championship gold, adding to their European Championship title. The British crew got their bows in front early on and were able to control the race from the front as the field sprinted behind them.

The Men’s Quadruple Sculls (M4x) saw Harry Leask and Tom Barras from Leander with crew mates George Bourne and Matt Haywood producing their best race of the season to win silver, less than a second behind champions Poland.  Harry said, “We didn’t have the best start to the season but thankfully we’ve got used to being in the boat now, and the results speak for themselves. It’s absolutely amazing to be back on the podium again.”

Will Stewart from Leander was in the winning crew of the Men’s Four beating Australia and Netherlands.
