St Mary’s Celebrates UK Maths Challenge Awards
St. Mary’s school are celebrating the success of their Year 5 and 6 mathematicians who took part in this year’s UK Maths Challenge with a gold award, four silver and seven bronze awards.
The Junior Maths Challenge is more typically completed by senior school children in Years 7 and 8 and so these awards are an exceptional achievement for all the pupils who chose to take part. The challenge encourages mathematical reasoning, precision of thought, and fluency in using mathematical techniques to solve interesting problems – and is designed to make the subject accessible and fun!
The children enjoy subject specialist teaching throughout their time at St. Mary’s, and Head of Maths Caroline Dowling is delighted with their achievements. She said “I’m very proud of how hard our children worked, they approached the challenge with great maturity and concentration – and the results speak for themselves! Congratulations everyone.”
During the school’s recent ISI Inspection, in which they were found to be ‘Excellent in all areas’, the inspectors found that: “Pupils’ numeracy skills are extremely well developed. Pupils demonstrate an excellent understanding of numerical concepts and apply them confidently. Pupils’ mathematical skills across the age range are a real strength, helped by the challenging activities that enthuse and stretch their learning. The individual attention paid to all pupils helps ensure that they achieve their very best.”
