Kids Try Out Tag Rugby at Schools Festival

Children from local primary schools enjoyed another tag rugby festival at Henley Rugby Club over the last two Tuesdays.

Coaches from The Performance Sports Group have been teaching children throughout the autumn term in schools as part of the Player Reach Out Programme (PROP).

Children from Reception, Year 1, Year 2, Year 3 and Year 4 all played in their own year group specific sessions with adapted games and matches. Henley Rugby Club’s “tiger turf” pitch at Dry Leas off Marlow Road provided a wonderful facility for the children to play on. Tag rugby is an adapted version of the sport in which a tackle is replaced by a tag being removed from an opponent’s velcro waistband.

Chris Ellison, Head Coach from Performance Sports, said “This is a fantastic programme introducing tag rugby skills to local school children in their primary school settings. As you can see from all the smiles on the children’s faces they are absolutely loving it. The opportunity to visit the rugby club, play with children from other schools and take advantage of the wonderful facilities on offer is very specials. Memories forever. Both these festivals give the children a chance to show off their skills in a relaxing, inclusive and fun environment for all.  I’d like to thank the sponsors and Henley Educational Trust for funding this programme.”

Henley Rugby Club recently won a national Rugby Football Union award for mini and junior delivery. The PROP programme is an important part of this community work building the club links for boys and girls to continue their rugby after school. The programme is designed to help children develop their knowledge of the sport and TREDS values for rugby: Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline, Sportsmanship.

Trinity, Shiplake and Badgemore were Year 3 Teacher from Badgemore School, Imogen Fernandes said, “It’s been really engaging for the all the children and they’ve all been involved and they seem to be having a great time.”  Aiden, Year 4 added, “We’ve been learning about passing and movement.  The best tip I’ve learnt is to pass backwards. It’s been really good fun.”

Henley Rugby Club are hosting two morning only tag rugby festivals during the Christmas holidays on 22 December and 5 January. Children in School Year Reception, Year 1, 2 and 3 are all welcome to join. For further details please contact Chris on chris@performance-sports.org.uk
