Henley Hockey Ladies – Double Win Weekend

Henley Ladies faced another busy weekend with a league visit to Southampton on Saturday and a trip to Colchester for the Trophy Quarter Finals on Sunday.

Henley 1 Southampton 0

The match on Saturday against Southampton was always going to be tough with the bottom of the league strugglers packing their defence. Henley tried to take the game to them but constantly broken play and poor suing conditions affected the tempo.

It was Henley who created the most chances but they were just unable to convert and at times left themselves dangerous exposed at the back.

Great play by Kath Evans and Mel Lennard however kept the score at 0-0.

A stern half time team talk seemed to do the trick and in the second half Henley played much better hockey and were rewarded halfway through the second half when a well worked short corner left Serena Hickman with a simple tap in.

The 3 points leave Henley remaining at fourth in the table.

Henley 2 Colchester 0

Sunday saw an excited Henley team take on unknowns Colchester in the trophy.  The girls started the game at a great tempo and old hand, Esme Emmett was soon wreaking havoc in the opposition defence.

Attack after attack came with Lou England and Kat Green acting some sublime hockey and ten minutes in Henley took the lead with a well struck short corner from captain Rachel Herbert. The umpire wrongly disallowed the goal but that just spurred Henley on more.

The first half finished goalless but as Henley pushed forward more and more in the second half they became vunerable at the back. However, Georgie Metcalfe and Kath Evans played superbly to keep the opposition at bay.

On the 56th minute some great play by the Henley forwards played in Rachel Herbert whose shot was saved, but the rebound fell to Ellie Roseff who slotted it home for her first Henley goal!

Shortly after sisters Rachel Herbert and Esme Emmett combined to seal the victory.  Henley now play North Notts at home in the semi finals on Sunday 24 March.
