New Henley Mayor Elect and Deputy Mayor Elect Appointed

Councillor Stefan Gawrysiak was appointed Mayor Elect and Councillor Martin Akehurst, Deputy Mayor Elect at the Full Council Meeting last night.

Previously Assistant Head Teacher at Gillotts School where he taught for 29 years. He continues to actively push for a rebuilt Gillotts School; a 21st century school to cater for the needs of all the students in Henley.

As well as being Deputy Mayor this year, he has also been the Chair of Mill Meadows and has forged a path to update Mill Meadows whilst preserving its character and beauty. His plans include deck chairs on the meadows, music in the bandstand every Sunday during the summer season, recycling of litter waste and the refurbishment of the Mill Meadows toilets. He has also been on the Henley Town Council Finance committee of which he says, “I will always strive for value for money and keep a close eye on the wise investment of Henley’s money.”

He is also involved with the Henley Bridge Rotary Club in the organisation of the Henley Half Marathon and the Sue Ryder Fireworks. Both of these activities raised over £40,000 for local charities.

Martin has lived in Henley for 32 years. He is a retired IT Manager, Associate Engineer, after which he ran two local businesses (web design and electronics marketing). He has been Chairman of Valley Road School PTA and Henley Investments, and is currently Chairman of Chandler Akehurst Ltd. and fundraises for the Samaritans and the MS Society. Martin is also on the management board of a preserved building in Henley.

He also acts professionally and has appeared in Love Actually, The Mysterious Voynich, Art Crimes Two and (briefly) East Enders!

Martin has been a member of the Planning Committee, Vice Chair of the Finance & Strategy Committee, Core Strategy Group, Neighbourhood Planning Group, Henley Town Hall IT Working Group and am a member of the River and Rowing Museum Board of Trustees. He represents Henley Town Council at SODC Planning Appeals and Core Strategy Enquiries.

The Mayor Making Ceremony when the Mayor and Deputy Mayor will be officially voted in will be on Tuesday 14th May 2013.
