Katherine Grainger Presents 20 Years of Girlguiding Service Award

Katherine Grainger, the Olympic Gold Medalist rower, was a special guest at 1st Henley Brownies on Thursday night when she came to present the leader, Michaela Clarke, with her 20 years of service to Girlguiding award. Michaela started helping her Mum at 1st Dorney Guides in 1988 and took over the running of the unit until 2000. She then concentrated on bringing up her young family before she re-opened 1st Henley Brownies in 2007. Michaela said, “I was very honoured that Katherine presented the award to me and it has made it extra special that she had connections both with Dorney and Henley where I have lived and done Girlguiding. I was also a volunteer at Dorney Lake for the Olympics in 2012. It was great to hear that Katherine enjoyed being a Brownie and Guide too.”

During the evening guests enjoyed a quiz, the chance to show Katherine their rowing skills and a slide show of pictures showing what the Brownies got up to in 2013. Michaela would like to thank HDL Audio Visual Services for providing the projector and screen and to Dave Murray who took the above photos.

The Brownies presented Michaela (Brown Owl) with a special box of ’20 year’ things which her daughter Rebecca who helps at Brownies had organised. After the presentation the guests got their chance to wear and hold Katherine’s gold medal and got her autograph – and Michaela was delighted to get her 2012 Olympic Gamesmaker shirt signed by Katherine too!
