Billy Badger returned home safely to Badgemore School last week to the delight of the children after his epic round the world trip with Mark Naylor. Mark is a good friend of Tuc Ahmad who is a Governor at the school. Mark, a photographer, who has lived most of his life in or around Henley, left with Billy the school mascot in June last year.
During his world trip Billy enjoyed travelling by boat, plane, rickshaw and backpack; he swam with all manner of sealife; enjoyed tasting different foods; visited beautiful and historic places of interest in all of the countries he has visited; and he has met people, children and adults, from all walks of life and in different situations. Mark kept the children up-to-date with his travels by sending back postcards, reports and photos and a special page was created on the school website http://www.badgemore.oxon.sch.uk/billy-badger/ which has a video showing Billy scuba-diving!
Billy and Mark particularly enjoyed their visit to a school on the Banda Islands. Mark talked to the children in last week’s assembly about writing to the children there and taking back a friend of Billy’s for them to keep when he returns there on another trip he is planning in September. Mark also spoke about a children’s hospital in Cambodia which he had visited and needed more funding. He asked the children if they could have a special fundraising event to raise some money for the hospital.
Jacky Steele, Headteacher said, “I was bowled over by Mark’s generosity of spirit in helping us in such an original way – the children have learnt such a lot through Billy’s adventure.”
Mark presented the school with photos from his trip which included a little girl, Meha with Billy. He also gave out bracelets to children who could name some capital cities.
Billy is looking forward to going on his travels again with his friend… wonder what he will get up to next time?
