Henley Choral Society is inviting all singers from Henley and surrounding areas to a ‘Dream of Gerontius’ Workshop at 10.30am on Saturday 23rd January at Holy Trinity, Henley.

Benjamin Goodson, 24 year old Musical Director of Henley Choral Society, who will be leading the workshop, explains:  ‘I am inviting all singers from Henley and the surrounding areas to come to this Workshop on Elgar’s ravishing Dream of Gerontius. Henley Choral Society will be joined by the Lea Singers – the chamber group I also direct – and our superb regular accompanist David Smith. Every choral singer should sing ‘Gerontius’ at least once in a singing lifetime! This will be a fabulous opportunity for any singer – whether they have sung this wonderful  work before and want to experience it again, or have that pleasure to come.’

Described by Paul Spicer, Professor of Choral Conducting at Birmingham Conservatoire as ‘unequivocally one of the most naturally gifted conductors I have encountered,’ Benjamin Goodson is Director of Chapel Music at Somerville College, Oxford. He is musical director of the award-winning Bath Camerata and the Lea Singers chamber choir and was recently appointed chorus master at Dorset Opera Festival as well as being Musical Director of Henley Choral Society and Youth Choirs. Educated at Hertford College, Oxford, Benjamin won Oxford University’s most coveted conducting prize. He has studied conducting with Paul Spicer (Finzi Singers), Peter Stark (RCM), Colin Metters (RAM), Neil Thomson and John Farrer (LCW), and Ulrich Windfuhr (Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg). He has a growing reputation as a leader of vocal technique workshops, such as those for the Whitehall Choir, and for Bedford, Buckingham, Letchworth and Stevenage Choral Societies.

HCS Chair Mrs Susan Edwards explains: ‘we have run all-day Workshops before and received fantastic feedback about the quality of the experience from singers who have come from all over the South East and beyond to sing with us – they also usually love the warm welcome and home-made cakes! We look forward to welcoming singers from near and far.’

The workshop is open to ages 16-plus and is free for under 25’s. Tickets: £20.00.  Score hire is also available. Contact: Mrs Jenny Fleming Tel:  01491 575165 email: or full information and registration form at
