Sir William to Celebrate His Birthday at Steam and Vintage Transport Festival

steam-vintage-vehicleThe Steam and Vintage Transport Festival at Fawley Hill will be celebrating Sir William McAlpine’s 80th birthday as well as Her Majesty’s 90th this weekend with lots of red, white and blue. The weekend will be known as ‘BILLSDAYS II’.

Lady McAlpine said, “This is a Birthday Party, not a formal ‘Rally’, we are celebrating British Engineering and transport in all its forms; but this Party would not have been possible without the vast number of enthusiasts who have given help and advice and many of whose treasures are here for all to enjoy.  It is heartening to see that, despite concerns to the contrary, there ARE young people with the same passions as their parents and grandparents, who want to preserve historic and beautiful engineering creations for future generations.  We may be dismissed as petrol heads, trainssexuals (as a Swedish friend described us) boffins, grease monkeys, nuts: but without us a whole swathe of our heritage would have been lost, consigned to the sort of books that detail Roman central heating – learned but unread by the majority.”

“So – enjoy our passions, nurture your own, preserve everything that is beautiful and interesting so that it may inspire future artists, engineers and problem-solvers.  Remember how much the world owes to BRITISH engineering and problem-solving curiosity.  Without the railways, there would have been no Industrial Revolution and no Empire.  Without British engineers, there would have been no railways! “

There will be lots of other entertainment including fairground attractions and camel rides plus lots of food and drink to enjoy…
