The Lions Club of Henley presented a cheque for £230 on Monday evening to 1st Shiplake Scouts Group so that they could make some well needed improvements to their Scout hut in Upper Shiplake.
Over the last few months they have been campaigning for donations to enable them to repair the roof of their hut, which is leaking rather badly. Whilst this fundraising is going ahead steadily they identified a number of other needs that would enable them to make their lives more comfortable especially when meeting during the cold winter months. The old wall heaters had failed and they desperately needed replacing together with some self-closing taps for the cloakroom facilities. With all their efforts going into fundraising for the roof they felt unable to proceed with the extras.
It was at this point that Henley Lions got involved and secured the necessary funds for the heaters and taps.
Lion President Wendy Franklin handed the cheque over to Debs Boughey the Group Scout Leader of 1st Shiplake and was joined by Chris Varnals who coordinated the request and donation on behalf of Henley Lions.
Ernie Povey from Shiplake Scouts said, “The 1st Shiplake Scouts Group would like to thank The Lions Club of Henley-on-Thames for their very kind donations of two wall heaters and a pair of non-concussive taps for the toilets. The group has Beaver, Cub and Scout sections catering for boys and girls between the ages of 6 – 14 years old. All sections have a very active programme ranging from playing games in our scout hut in the winter to camping in tents during the summer. The 1st Shiplake Scout hut is located opposite Orwells pub. Extra helpers always wanted.
We are grateful for any donations towards our leaking roof. Please contact Debs below.”
