The U10 AFC Henley Hurricanes ran out 2 1 winners against fellow promoted side the Whitegrove Knights at Jubilee Park.
In what was a scrappy game the Hurricanes ran out relatively comfortable winners as the Knights scored a late consolation.
The first quarter was a tight affair with the Hurricanes dominating possession without creating any real chances. Tom Yeoman went close on a couple of occasions but the Knights keeper was able to deal with everything thrown his way.
In the second quarter the hosts took the lead as Tom Yeoman beat a couple of players before playing the ball through to Sam Winters who made no mistake from 8 yards out.
Captain Olly Saunders was marshalling the troops well and winning the jousts against the visitors’ attacking strikers whilst Nicolai Bruun-Andersen was showing all his attacking skills as his electric turn of pace and quick feet proved a real threat for the hosts.
The half time break saw the Hurricanes lead 1 0 and they continued their good form into the third quarter. Tom Atkinson and Finnbar Scott were both active down the flanks and created a number of chances for striker Tom Bonser. Bonser was his usual energetic self and was unlucky not to trouble the scorers with his attacking prowess.
The third quarter ended 1 0 but in the fourth quarter the Hurricanes put the Knights to the sword. Joe Turner was snuffing out all the visitors’ raids and setting up the Hurricanes attacks as his intelligent play freed up the hosts to go on the offence. It was striker Luca Thomson who was the Hurricanes’ knight in shining armour as he netted after an accurate kick from keeper Ben Horner, who had had little to do until this point.
Horner was very unlucky to concede late on as he pulled off a magnificent save only to see the Knights score off the rebound but the Hurricanes closed out the match safely to record a 2 1 victory.
Managers Turner and Atkinson were said to be delighted by the performance and the spirit the side had showed to win ugly.
