Final Plans for May Fayre Announced

Councillor Sarah Miller whose idea it was to bring the May Fayre back to the original Market Place is really looking forward to the event now on Monday 1 May.  She said, “It’s been really fun to organise everything even though we haven’t had much time.  Everybody we have spoken to is so excited to have this special event return to the Market Place. If this year is a success we shall definitely be repeating the event next year and thereafter. So it’s important that a) all the Henley folk come and support us and b) It doesn’t rain!

There will be over 20 stall holders providing sweets and popcorn, face painting, cakes, tombola and other children’s games. There will also be a selection of vintage attractions that many will remember from the early days of the May Fayre, such as Strongman Striker, Coconut Shy, Splat the Rat, Buzz Wire and Hook the Duck.

The main attraction will be the May Pole which will be situated in Market Square where the Christmas tree usually stands. The May Pole dance will open the event at 12 noon.

Throughout the day there will be dancing and gymnastics from Divas & Dudes, Springbox Gymnastics, Joe Flynn’s Irish Dancers and of course no May Fayre is complete without the traditional Morris Dancers.

At 4pm there will be a Tug of War challenge. The Rowbarge Inn will be taking on Henley Hawks Women. There is also an invitation for teams of 8 to come along and challenge the Hawks. Just meet outside Facy at 4pm.

The day will finish with some toe tapping music from Sam Brown and her Ukulele Club.

Children’s Fancy Dress Competition judged by Angie Best.  Come along at 12 noon dressed in any fancy dress and meet us on the steps of the Town Hall where Angie will judge the very best boy and girl costume. The winner will be crowned May King & May Queen.

The organising committee would like to acknowledge our sponsors who have helped us to put this event together – Henley Town Council, Wilkins Removals, IBS Office Supplies, Penny & Sinclair,  Divas & Dudes and Hot Gossip.

More marshalls and helpers are still needed on the day.  If you can help or know a man or woman who can, please contact Sarah via email henleymayfair@yahoo.com

PLEASE NOTE the road around the Square, from Station House to the front of the Town Hall and the road from Facy down to Joules will be closed from 10am – 7pm.
