Statement from Gillotts on Impact of Chiltern Edge School Going into Special Measures

Chiltern Edge School in Sonning Common has been put into special measures after an ‘inadequate’ inspection by Ofsted at the school in March.

Oxfordshire County Council (OCC) said it will begin consulting on Friday over whether the school should shut.

Catharine Darnton, Headteacher at Gillotts School said, “Oxfordshire County Council is to consult on the future of Chiltern Edge School, which has been placed in Special Measures following an Ofsted rating of ‘Inadequate’.  The consultation, which will run until the middle of June, will look into the potential impact of closure and whether alternative solutions can be found to ensure good quality education in this part of Oxfordshire.  Clearly any alternative solutions may involve Gillotts and in any case will also have an impact on us.

OCC is continuing to support Chiltern Edge in addressing the immediate areas of concern raised by Ofsted and all the local secondary schools (Gillotts, Langtree and Icknield) have offered their support.  This will be a very concerning situation for everyone associated with Chiltern Edge.  Our first thoughts are for all those this affects directly and for the significant period of uncertainty that they are now entering.

The Governing Body will of course respond to the consultation.  As we consider our response, we will keep in the forefront of our minds the need to safeguard the quality of education and outcomes for students at Gillotts School, as well as our wider responsibilities to all of South East Oxfordshire’s young people.”
