With a packed to the capacity Ballroom, the audience at the St George’s Day Concert at Phyllis Court Club were treated to a rousing patriotic programme of English music and a traditional afternoon tea on Saturday.  Performing were the Phyllis Court Singers who filled the Ballroom with a wonderful programme of music which included songs from pop, musicals and traditional songs and hymns.

A brilliant medley of London themed songs opened the concert with the 46 members of the Singers surrounding the audience in a semi circle before they moved to the front stage.  Led by Musical Director, James Church on the piano the choir went on to sing beautiful renditions of Angels by Robbie Williams and Phantom of the Opera which Tony Horsfall, Chair of the Singers introduced this by saying “this is the most challenging piece we’ve ever sung!”

The Phyllis Court Singers perform at regular concerts at Phyllis Court Club and for charity organisations locally, which they do for free as well as well as collecting money for local charities at the Club’s Christmas Eve Carol Concert at Phyllis Court.

The Concert ended with a sing-along which included I Vow to Thee My Country and Jerusalem before the National Anthem was sung.

Tony Horsfall said afterwards, “The emphasis of the group is singing for enjoyment. We do not ask prospective members to have previous musical experience, nor is the ability to read music required or an audition necessary.  We were delighted that the concert sold out 10 days before.  It was the biggest number of Singers too performing at single concert beating the record of 38.”

The concert included a tribute to Betty Maddock, the Singers past Musical Director who passed away in January.  Betty’s daughter, Sharon Ferriter and five other members of Betty’s family attended the Concert on Saturday. Sharon expressed her gratitude to the Singers with the following words. ‘’A wonderful afternoon filled with the joy and fun of music and the friendship it evokes. Mummy, I am sure would have enjoyed it and I know would be both proud and thrilled that so many of the Singers came together to share (their) love and talents.’’
