After the Club’s normal business had been completed, the guest speaker Hilary Arthur, Director and Clinical Lead from Riverside Counselling Services gave a talk accompanied by a slide presentation about the services the local charity offers.
The Riverside Counselling Services was established in 1989 is based in Henley and has satellite locations in Wallingford, Berinsfield and Didcot. It is accredited by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and all of its counsellors work within the BACP`s Ethical Framework for the Counselling Professions.
The services provided cover both adult counselling and a specialised counselling service for young people called `The Space’. There are 41 counsellors, operating from the above mentioned 4 towns (in 11 different locations), and all counsellors work on a voluntary basis and provide 125 closed sessions per week. Riverside Services helps bridge the gap with the NHS Mental Health Pathway programme; most referrals to Riverside Services come from GPs and recommendation (`word of mouth`).
Hilary described the definition and process of counselling issues and the behaviours that the counsellors adopt during counselling sessions. All sessions last 50 minutes and are confidential; the customer fee for the initial consultation and subsequent sessions depends on the customer`s ability to pay according to a sliding scale determined at the first appointment.
The specific counselling service for young people, `The Space`, was started in 2015 to specifically address concerns that have been identified in this particular age group. In the field of mental health problems, 75% of such problems in adult life arise from these problems experienced in adolescence.
There were a large number of questions put to Hilary by the Probus members before Jim Hurst, on behalf of the members, thanked Hilary for an excellent presentation and discussion.
