On Sunday 18 March 2018, the River Thames at Henley will witness the 44th Henley Boat Races, the annual contest between Lightweight Rowing crews from Oxford and Cambridge Universities. Lightweight rowing, an Olympic sport, features male and female athletes who average no more than 70kg (men) and 57kg (women). This means that crews are always well matched and races are often very close and exciting. Prizes this year will be awarded by Team GB, Olympic Silver medallist in Rio, Jessica Eddie.
Racing takes place between 1:30-4:00pm and spectators are very welcome on the tow-path to join the partisan crowd to cheer for their chosen blue – Light or Dark, and enjoy an entertaining afternoon by the river. Races are staged over 2000m, starting just downstream of Henley Bridge. In addition, racing will feature a ‘local derby’ between crews representing Upper Thames Rowing Club and Leander Club, competing for the Peter Sutherland Memorial Trophy.
There is live commentary during racing, a children’s entertainer and music from the ‘Hot Wind’ brass ensemble. Parking and toilet facilities are available adjacent to the finish on Temple Island Meadows where food and drink will be on sale.
