The Christ Church Centre has raised £504 for the Alzheimer’s Society with their recent tea party. On Saturday 30 June, the Centre put on a spread of fairy cakes, finger sandwiches and scones in aid of the charity, which supports people in the UK affected by dementia.
The event was attended by a number of families and friends of the church, including the Mayoress Anna Lambert and Deputy Mayoress Dorothy Arlett. The Christ Church Centre’s Resident Chef, Donna, whipped up a feast for the guests. There were a number of activities to entertain younger guests, from cupcake decorating to a hugely popular quiz. Trained soprano Bethany Cox, captivated the crowd with her singing, accompanied by her mother Dawn on the keyboard, and Bob Young gave a poetry reading.
The delightful occasion was made even better by the fantastic total it raised for charity. Lisa Thompson, Services Manager for Alzheimer’s Society, was thrilled upon receiving the final cheque. “We’re more than overwhelmed. It’s absolutely fabulous,” she said. “We rely on this money and volunteers, massively. We do rely on donations from the public and events like this.” Lisa was also impressed that so many generations had been to the tea party. “They brought children and parents and grandparents together,” she added. “That’s a huge thing, to make people aware when they’re young.”
The Christ Church Centre has long been a huge support for local people with memory problems. Until recently, they hosted the now closed Bluebells Memory club for Age UK, and have set up the weekly Memory Cafe in its place. Centre Manager Vanessa Bird was happy to be able to support Alzheimer’s Society with their important work. “Since the closure of Bluebells we have been trying to do more for people with dementia,” she said. “We thought cupcake day was a great opportunity to do something for a society that does great things.”
