Herald Launches Henley Regatta Oarsome Street Party and Competition

Henley Royal Regatta will be missed by many this year both on and off the river.  It would be a shame that as a town we don’t mark our town’s biggest event of the year in some way. Today we’re launching our Henley Regatta Oarsome Street Party inviting residents to join together with neighbours in front gardens to host a socially distanced street party (adhering to government guidelines) on Saturday 4 July.

The Herald would also like to invite residents to enter our house and boat decoration competition to win a Regatta hamper.  We’re looking for a Regatta themed house/front garden or boat that encompasses all things ‘Henley’ e.g. oars, boats, bunting, boat tents, trophies, picnics, flags etc. The competition will be judged by members of The Creative Duck.

Editor Michaela Clarke said, “I had the idea a few weeks ago about marking our town’s biggest event of the year in some way and getting the community to come together.  I asked a few people who had organised the street parties for VE Day and asked whether they thought people would be up for another one.  The unanimous replies were ‘Yes’.  We’d love people to get really dressed up in hats, blazers etc or perhaps rowing tops and shorts and enjoy a few drinks with their neighbours in these strange and difficult times.”

The Henley Herald will be working with the Henley Mutual Covid-19 Aid Group, Henley Neighbourhood Watch and Henley Town Council.

Nothing in your wardrobe to wear?  We’re sure that our great Henley independent retailers who have been shut for 12 weeks would love you to support them by buying something new from them for this occasion.

To register your street party or entry into the house and boat decoration competition, please email us with your details and what time your party is due to start at news@henleyherald.com  Register by Friday 3 July at 5pm

We would also like to offer fun doortraits (family/friends portraits in front of your doors) for £10 (high resolution digital photos) with half of this money going to support The Chiltern Centre.   Again please register for this via news@henleyherald.com

We hope you’ll join in with your neighbours to mark our town’s special event and to continue the community spirit that has been shown throughout the town during these difficult times.
