George Clooney’s New Film Being Filmed at Upper Thames RC

Filming for The Boys in the Boat, directed by George Clooney has been shooting this week at Upper Thames Rowing Club and on the Henley Reach of the River Thames.

Upper Thames Rowing Club is the base for the filming this week where old boats, cars and hundreds of extras have been seen on the footpath.

The Boys In The Boat is based on the book by Daniel James Brown. Adapted by Jon Hartmere and Mark L Smith, it’s the real life 1930s story of a rowing team from the University of Washington who, in depression-era America, headed to the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin.  Clooney has cast Joel Edgerton, Hadley Robinson and Callum Turner in the film, and it begins shooting this very week. The base of filming is Berkshire’s Winnersh Film Studios, a new facility that has only just officially opened its doors.

George Clooney has a house in Sonning and so the local location for filming was perfect.

The Environmental Agency issued a river restriction notice for this week with no boats navigating the Regatta course on the Berkshire side between 9.30-7.30pm.

Justin Sutherland, Chair of Upper Thames Rowing Club said, “A friend of mine Simon McCarthy, who is a Queen’s Waterman suggested that UTRC could be good location and we were contacted by the production company about 8-10 weeks ago.  We want to be at the centre of the rowing world and because of our fabulous location we have an opportunity to be that.”

Today (Thursday) the film crew has left and gone to Dorney Lake.  Justin commented, “Our members were inconvenienced for 3 days and it worked well for us.   Their nice donation to the Club has enabled us to try something a little bit different this year at Henley Royal Regatta when we will open a bar to the public.  It was a very positive experience and it has given us the impetus to make a few changes on how we might the run in the Club in the future.  Sometimes it takes something to come along to give you the impetus to make changes that you’ve been putting off for a rainy day.  This has encouraged us to make decision, that will be beneficial in the future.”
