Tomorrow (Saturday) Henley Town are hosts to Bicester Town in Division 1 East of the Uhlsport Hellenic League, kicking off at 3 p.m.
Rivalry between the two clubs dates back far more than a century. In 1903-04 Henley were beaten 2-1 at home by the Foxhunters in the semi-finals of the Oxfordshire Charity Cup, but a year later the Town were revenged by beating Bicester 3-1 in the final of the same competition.
Overall, the sides have proved well matched, though both have had longish runs of wins in different eras. In all, they have met 31 times, with Henley chalking up 13 wins compared to Bicester’s 15.
At the end of the 2011-12 season, Bicester went into hibernation as a result of a dispute with their landlords, but they re-emerged five years later and were admitted back into the Hellenic League. They finished second in Division 1 East, gaining four points from their two games with Henley, but, despite the Town finishing one place lower, it was they who were promoted, as Bicester, playing at Ardley, chose not to go up until they could find a new ground in the town itself.
Bicester finished fifth last season and look likely to improve on that in the current term. As a result of Tuesday night’s matches, Bicester moved to the top of the table and Henley to the bottom. All in all, while Henley badly need to improve their league position, they will do well to get any reward from this match.
Henley Town Reserves are away to Marston Saints Reserves tomorrow in the first round of the Oxfordshire Intermediate Cup, kick-off 1.30 p.m. The Intermediate Cup is a competition which the reserves won three times in the first decade of the present century, and it is always likely to bring about some interesting fixtures.
The Sunday team have a league fixture next morning when they entertain Burghfield, kick-off 10.30 a.m.
