BTEC Business Extended Diploma Level 3 students celebrated their graduation last week at The Henley College and presented a cheque for £2269.26 to Sue Ryder. This fantastic amount had been raised at events which were part of the students Managing an Event Unit with the team who organised an event at Maidenhead Football Club raising the most with £853.
The aim of the unit is to develop students’ skills and knowledge of organising and coordinating a business event. This is a practical and challenging activity that involves liaising with others, organising refreshments and equipment, planning, keeping records, managing a budget and carrying out the event. The students must ensure that the event is carried out within the required legal framework, such as Contract Law, Consumer Protection Laws and Health and Safety.
The Head of Faculty, Tristan Arnison at The Henley College said, “It’s great to be able to to celebrate both the wonderful amount of money you’ve raised for Sue Ryder and what you have accomplished over the last couple of years. You’ve done some amazing things. Congratulations to all of you all in showing that stickability over last 2 years, hitting those deadlines, completing those assignments and working very hard through that period to open up opportunities for you. All the best for the next steps.”
Gemma Wise from Sue Ryder received the cheque on behalf the charity. She said, “Thank you. It’s not easy fundraising. I know that first hand so what you have done is incredible. I met a young man last year who was just a few years older than yourself. I met him in the hospice and he was dying and it was incredibly difficult to talk to him. His room in our hospice was filled with photos and bunting and there always people in there. Although he was dying, the last few weeks of his life was filled with the essence of life. There was so much love, care and support. The money you have raised will enable us to continue giving that support to his parents and for future parents who can come through our doors and can be parents and not carers and they can have the time they need with their loved ones to remember and to have those precious minutes. That is exactly what you help us do. It costs us £18 for one hour of care. I hope you realise the difference you have made.”
Afterwards Maggie Hendry, BTEC Business Programme Leader gave out awards for Achievement, Progress and Attitude. The winners were:

Sarah Webb, Business teacher concluding by saying, “The quality of Business BTEC students was exceptional this year. The students have all achieved so much and move forward to their next chapter with essential skills, knowledge and confidence.”
