Courtiers Beat Towergate in The Face of Henley Quiz Tie Breaker

Six teams took part in the annual The Face of Henley Companies Challenge Quiz Night held at Badgemore Park Golf Club.

Last year’s winners Mercers competed against Towergate, Courtiers, Kench & Co, Indigo Rye and Athena, Henley.

With one round to go, Towergate were 11 points behind and they played their joker to great effect with maximum points (20) to draw level with Courtiers to force a tie-breaker. Both teams were well clear of the trailing other teams.  This was a repeat of the epic battle waged between the two teams, two years ago.

Mark Evans from Towergate said “Unfortunately, we were a bit “trigger happy” with our tie break answer (and were missing the Hemmingway knowledge of Clive) and got our answer wrong, handing the trophy to Courtiers. Still, it was a great effort with a depleted team of nine and we will be back next year to fight again. If only we could have found one more answer!!”

Leo Hallam from Courtiers said, “The Courtiers team enjoyed an evening supporting the Faces of Henley charity in the annual quiz.  Finally exorcising the demons of the past, Courtiers triumphed and took the trophy. A great effort from some worthy opponents, the bravest of whom will see Courtiers back next year to defend the title! Well done to all and in learning about and supporting a worthwhile local cause, the team also discovered a few things about each other: an in-depth knowledge of 90s pop music and a love for 80s Sitcom ‘The Golden Girls’ came from some rather unexpected quarters!”

The wooden spoon was won by newcomers, Athena Henley.

The Face of Henley Charity was set up in 2002 to raise money for those suffering or experiencing tragedy within the Henley-on-Thames area.

Sarah Findall, Trustee of The Face of Henley said, “The quiz was set up 14 years ago and this year we raised £953 for the charity which will help quite a few worthy causes in Henley and the surrounding area so thank you all.   We look forward to welcoming the teams back next year.”
