Invesco in Henley donated Christmas presents to local children’s hospice Helen & Douglas House. Every year this local charity puts together a list of toys they need at the hospice for local children to play with during their stays and local companies can choose which gifts to buy.
Invesco donated 40 presents worth £400 which included toys and sensory gifts for children being treated at the hospice to play with during their respite stays, as well as gifts for parents, terminally ill children and their siblings to take home.
There was much excitement when the presents arrived. Finley aged 9 who has been coming to Helen & Douglas House since he was just two years old helped open the presents. Finley was born with a rare genetic condition, GINS1 and his condition means that his growth is restricted and he remains susceptible to infection, but he is still a bundle of energy.
Now, several times a year, Finley, Mum Michaela and little sister Lucie, all enjoy a stay at Helen & Douglas House. Coming to the hospice allows them to all enjoy their time together, in a safe space that they all know and to enable Mum to have some respite and to spend some time with Finley’s little sister, Lucie. It has become a support network for them and a familiar happy place where they have made memories as a family. Whilst at Helen & Douglas House Finley enjoys playing Minecraft, playing pool, baking or even doing some art.
Michaela said, “Coming to Helen & Douglas House makes such a difference for us all, it gives me the opportunity to do things with Finley or with sister Lucie and also time to rest. It’s a little taste of heaven. The staff here are wonderful and I can’t thank them enough.”
Christopher Lyes, Head of UK Retail Distribution at Invesco said “Having worked with Helen & Douglas House as our charity partner over 2018, we have got to understand just how much of an amazing job that they do for the children and families that they work with every day of the year. As a team we are so pleased to be able to help in this small way and hope that the gifts bring a little extra joy to an incredibly brave and deserving group of people.”
Helen & Douglas House was Invesco’s charity of the year in 2018 and they raised a massive £175,000 through fundraising initiatives including Invesco Island, bake sales, The Thames Challenge, Christmas charity dinner dance and Christmas cards. Their staff also volunteered their time to help the hospice with Santa suit packing, baking for Blewbury Open Gardens and manning phones at the charity’s JACKfm Radiothon.
Nicola Wilson from Helen & Douglas House said “Christmas is a very special time at Helen & Douglas House with pantomimes and our Children’s Christmas party with lots of fun and laughter. We are so grateful to companies like Invesco who choose us as their charity of the year and for the Christmas presents that they have donated. The children had so much fun opening the presents and playing with them. We could not do what we do to care for local terminally ill children and their families without wonderful supporters like Invesco.”
