Yeoman Stands Guard Over Knights!

The U12 AFC Henley Hurricanes put in a grItty performance at Jubilee Park as they won 2 0 against the Whitegrove Knights to see them soar to the dizzy heights of 4th in the East Berks Division 1 League.

The Hurricanes started brightly as striker Tom Yeoman volleyed just over from 20 yards before showing that was the perfect sighter as he made no mistake moments later. An accurate goal kick from Olly Saunders was picked up by Tom Atkinson in the middle of the pitch and his lobbed pass forward was picked up by Yeoman who calmly rounded the keeper and slotted home to open the scoring.

Anchor man Ethan Holliday was really showing his class in the midfield and he beat four Whitegrove defenders before shooting narrowly wide.

At the back Captain Joe Turner was putting in a performance reminiscent of the great Virgil van Dijk as his positional sense and reading of the game meant that very little got through.

Mid way through the first half Yeoman had to limp off as an injury sustained to his ankle meant that he could not carry on for the reminder of the half. Olly Colvin moved up front and he caused the Whitegrove defence plenty of problems but the half closed with the hosts one up.

Tom Bonser was putting in a real shift at right back and was linking well with Alec Steel who was unlucky not to score with a left foot effort that flashed across the face of goal early in the second half.

Man of the match Olly Saunders had to deal with a number of long range efforts and his ability to deal with corners was also pivotal as he cleared his lines with the minimum of fuss.

Henry Steel was showing what an accomplished defender he has become and his distribution down the left flank was key in moving the Hurricanes up the field.

The game was still very much in the balance however until Sam Robinson wrapped the scoring and the points up for the hosts. Yeoman broke with the ball in the midfield before slipping in an inch perfect pass to Robinson whose pace took him away from the Knights defence and he rounded the keeper before calmly rolling the ball into the back of the net to send the Jubilee Park home crowd into raptures.

Managers Turner and Atkinson was said to be delighted by the grit and spirit the team had shown and were now looking forward to their away trip to NPL next Saturday.
