Janet Richmond has hung up her scissors and hairdryer at the Over 60s Club after 25 years of being the resident hairdresser there.
Janet joined the club in 1994 not long after the centre was saved and bought by Henley Town Council. Yesterday she was thrown a retirement party with lots of members coming to wish her well. She was presented with a bouquet of flowers, a cake and lifetime membership card to the club.
Janet who lives in Emmer Green said, “It’s sad to be leaving due to my health as I can’t drive any more. I shall miss everyone particularly the laughs. The members here are much more than clients, they are my friends. They’ve helped me get through life too when it has been tough. Not much has changed over the years but the numbers of members has decreased. When I first came it was much busier. It was like a conveyor belt of clients waiting to have their hair done and two lady members used to help me with shampooing. I don’t have too many plans for my retirement. I’ll enjoy having more time to read and garden though.”
Gill Dodds, Chair of the Club’s Management Committee said, “The lovely thing about Janet is that she has been much more than hairdresser. She’s been a stand in manager, she’s helped out in crisis and she’s been such a lovely friend to people and shared their lives both the ups and owns and we’ll miss her and I’m sure she’ll miss us.”
The club has welcomed new hairdresser Bianca Knibbs who will be at the club 9:30-3pm on Wednesday’s and Thursday’s in the recently decorated salon. Members get discounted prices, but anyone is welcome to make an appointment simply by ringing the club to book on 01491 574718. Payment is possible by cash or cheque, and a price list for 2019 is printed on the noticeboard in the salon.
Membership to the club is just £18 per year and is open Mon-Friday 10-4pm.
