School Creating Poppy From Old Clothes

Inspired by the Remembrance Poppy on Swanage Pier, Sacred Heart School Year 5 children are creating one for their school which uses old red and black scraps of materials from old clothes.

Mrs Park, the Year 5 teacher said, “We always do something for Remembrance in Year 5 each year.  I saw the really large one on Swanage Pier  (below) in half term and came back to school and told the children about it and they really liked the idea and were fired up about it. My husband made the frame and I brought in some old t-shirts which I cut up into strips and then children have cut them into pieces to tie on.”

The children are taking it in turns to go outside after school to invite parents and children to make a donation to the Poppy Appeal and tie on a piece of material.

We asked the children what Remembrance Day means to them.  Emily said, “People have died trying to help. They gave their lives for us.  Henry added, “They did the right thing for us.”

The Berks and Oxon Area Military Vehicle Trust will be displaying their vehicles in Market Place tomorrow (Saturday) and the Henley Remembrance Service will take place at 10.45am on Sunday morning on the Town Hall steps.
