Turn Your Window Red, White & Blue for VE Day 75th Anniversary

Local residents are being urged by the Henley-on-Thames and Peppard Branch of the Royal British Legion to join them in celebrating the 75th anniversary of VE Day on 8 May 2020 by decorating their windows in the colours of our National Flag, red, white and blue.

Photos of the three best-decorated windows as judged by a panel from Henley RBL will be published in Henley Herald and Henley Standard.

VE (Victory in Europe) Day, 8 May 1945, marked the day that the fighting in Europe came to an end in World War Two. It marked a hopeful beginning of healing after nearly six long years of pain, deprivation and loss of millions of lives. On that day countless numbers celebrated on the streets, hailing the Union Flag, the symbol of unity during the war, sustaining the nation’s morale and epitomising the spirit of camaraderie. This year, 75 years later, it would be wonderful if households could come together and create Union Flag decorations and proudly hang them in their windows for all to see.

The Early May Bank Holiday was specifically moved to Friday 8 May this year to tie in with celebrations of VE Day. COVID-19 crisis unfortunately meant that all the social events tied to this had to be cancelled, but this crisis may have given many of us a small glimpse into the deprivations endured by the WWII generation. Henley RBL asks us to make time and effort to remember and celebrate VE Day from the safety and relative comfort that derive from the wartime sacrifices.
