Need to spoil yourself and lift your spirits in these uncertain times or have a family birthday or anniversary coming up? How about treating yourself or a loved one to an afternoon tea?
We were delighted to be invited by local chef Simon McKenzie to try out his afternoon tea this weekend.
Simon delivered the beautifully presented afternoon tea to our doorstep being careful to adhere to the social distance measures.
We started with the generously filled sandwiches which were made from white sour dough bread filled with delicious smoked salmon & creme fraiche, cucumber & cream cheese, ham & grain mustard and chicken & sweetcorn mayonnaise.
We then choose to have the perfectly light and fluffy scones (plain and fruit) which were served with raspberry jam and clotted cream. There’s always a debate whether you should have cream or jam first. I personally like to have plenty of cream on top.
The finale of a trio of beautiful patisseries cakes were our favourite. They were an Almond Bakewell with Creme Brûlée & Pistachio, Passion fruit mousse on Jam Sandwich and Chocolate Fudge Brownie with Roasted Nuts. All three just melted in the mouth. The Passion fruit mousse was light and rich in flavour and the Brownie was just sublime!
The cost of the afternoon tea is £15 per person and available from Simon’s website https://www.chefsimonmckenzie.com/store
Simon also offers fresh prepared meals, baked breads, birthday cakes and has started a Cook-along-Live sessions where he drops off the ingredients for a meal and you watch and cook with him on Facebook live on a Saturday evening. We hope to do a review of one of these in the next few weeks.
