Henley Swim have today announced that they are looking for 6 women new to open water swimming to star in their 2021 This Girl Can campaign.
Supported by Henley Swim and record holding Ice Mile swimmer Cath Pendleton, the selected women will be provided with a 12-week training plan and a generous bundle of kit. Their journey will culminate at the Outdoor Swimmer Henley Swim Festival on 11 July, where as VIP guests they will swim a mile in the River Thames.
Henley Swim said “We are looking for women who know deep down that they would like to take on this challenge but need a little bit of help to take the first steps. By becoming part of a community, they will be fully supported every step of the way, and as a group we will help them to achieve their dream.”
The lucky ladies will be in good hands, they will be provided with a 12-week training plan written specifically for Henley Swim by open water coach and Olympian Keri-anne Payne. They will also have ongoing support from the Henley Swim 2021 This Girl Can Ambassador Cath Pendleton. Cath, 48 from Wales rediscovered her love of swimming in 2015 and went on to become the first person ever to swim the Ice Mile inside the Polar Antarctic Circle. She is the subject of the recent BBC Wales documentary The Merthyr Mermaid.
Women who are interested in taking up one of these free places must never have never swum in an open water swimming event before and should be near the beginning of their fitness journey or returning to exercise – maybe they will be overcoming barriers in doing so.
The chosen participants will receive a fantastic starter kit worth over £380 donated by sponsors of the campaign containing a Dryrobe, a Zoggs swimming costume and goggle, a Selkie hoodie and t-shirt, a Swim Secure tow float and a gift subscription to Outdoor Swimmer Magazine.
One winner from 2019 said “I am still loving open water swimming and can’t thank you all enough for introducing me and giving me the confidence to do it. I am 70 in June this year and am trying to swim at 70 different locations before my 70th birthday. You certainly unleashed something in me when I was picked”. Another 2019 winner said “This Girl Can really has been life changing for me and I’m so grateful for my place in the 2019 campaign”.
Open water swimming has been growing rapidly in popularity in recent years and the pandemic has now given the sport an even bigger boost.
