Nine Leander Club athletes have made the Olympic finals in Tokyo tonight starting at 1.30am with the Men’s Doubles Sculls. The rowing events were cancelled on Monday and Tuesday due to adverse weather conditions expected to hit Japan’s capital.
Matt Rossiter and Sholto Carnegie will be competing in the Men’s Four event which Team GB have won at every Olympics since 2000. The crew won their heat on Saturday easily to get a spot in the final.
A complete Leander crew will be competing in the Men’s Quad (Harry Leask, Angus Groom, Thomas Barras and Jack Beaumont) after winning the repecharge (second chance races) to get to the final. After winning Jack said, “We turned up today with a job to do and we did that,” said Beaumont. “I’m really proud of how we attacked the race, took it by the scruff of the neck.”
John Collins from Leander will partner with Graeme Thomas in the Men’s double sculls. After a nervy opener in Friday’s heats, the pair on Sunday came second in the semi-finals, being beaten by France.
The Women’s Four event will see Rowan McKellar and Karen Bennett from Leander rowing. On Sunday the crew beat the Poland and Romania to get one of the two final spots.
Good luck everyone, the whole of Henley is behind you.
