Obituary – Vera (Caroline) Hearne

One of Henley’s oldest residents, Caroline Hearne, aged 104 has recently passed away.

Caroline married Reginal in 1939 and lived in London (Lavender Hill, Battersea) all through the war years before moving to Henley. Her husband was an officer in the British army who served in Burma. They had no children.  On leaving the army, her husband became an actor appearing in both movies and TV shows.

Caroline was a regular at the Over 60s Social Club for many years.  Chair of Over 60s Club, Gill Dodds said, “Caroline’s independent spirit, although nearly blind, insisting on walking from her house at the bottom of Greys Road, to the 60+ Club, and back, not letting anyone help her. She was a very plucky lady.”

Caroline was a very proud and private person.  She was though so grateful to her neighbours who shopped for her and always there to help her.  She liked to keep up to date with current affairs by listening to the radio and she loved Reading Football Club and listened to the matches on the radio whenever she could.

There will be a private cremation and no service.

Caroline was a dear friend of my mum Eileen Leaver who enjoyed her company at the Over 60s Club.
