Mixed Results for Local Crews on First Day of Royal Regatta

Conditions on the opening day of the first six-day Henley Royal Regatta were tricky for crews going into a head wind.  There were opening rounds in the Britannia (M4+), Princess Elizabeth (JM8+), Temple (M8+), Fawley (JM4x), Prince of Wales (M4x) and Wyfold (M4-) for local crews Upper Thames, Henley Rowing Club, Shiplake College and Leander Club.

Henley Rowing Club lost both their races in the first round in the Britannia (Club Men4+) to Vesta Rowing Club by 3 1/2 lengths and in the Princes of Wales (Intermediate M4x) combined boat with University of London when they lost easily to DSR Copenhagen from Denmark.

Shiplake College had just one win on the opening day beating Bedford School in the Junior M8+ by 3 3/4 lengths.  Their crews lost in the Temple (M8+) to University of California by 2 1/2 lengths and in the Junior M4x they lost to local rivals Sir William Borlase’s by 4 1/2 lengths.

Upper Thames crews are through to the next round in the Britannia (M4+) winning in a tight race beating City of Oxford RC by half a length and in the Wyfold (M4-) they beat London RC A by 1 3/4 lengths. The M4x lost to University of Surrey by 2 lengths.

Leander Club opened their 2022 Regatta with an easy win in the Prince of Wales (Intermediate M4x) against Reading University B.
