U14s Henley Hawks Win County Cup

Henley Hawks U14s 23-12 Chinnor

By Max Tilney

The two teams hadn’t met previously this season and the opening five minutes saw Henley having to soak up strong Chinnor attacking play, based around a strong forward pack and equally strong runners in the centre.

The Henley defence was superb, with dominant tackling finally resulting in a turnover for a Henley scrum which was an early turning point, with Henley having increased confidence in their defensive capabilities and ability to steadily build their attacks and Chinnor frustrated that their game plan was being disrupted.

Henley dominated territorially and played the majority of the first 25 minutes in the Chinnor half. Three first half tries to Henley from flanker Tom Holborn, prop Oscar Tooley and full back Mackenzie Philpot, with one conversion from Joe Barratt took Henley to the break with a 17-0 lead.

The second half saw Chinnor apply increased pressure in attack, making some territorial gains when they could get the ball wide but Henley continued to frustrate their game plan, competing superbly at the breakdown and forcing errors. Chinnor’s frustration led to them being marched back an extra ten metres at a penalty for back-chat.

Henley displayed excellent game management, opting for a kick at goal and Joe Barratt secured the additional three points. However,
Chinnor maintained pressure and they ran in two second half tries out wide, converting one, taking the score to 20-12. The Chinnor crowd sensed an opportunity for a come-back but the Henley players stuck to their game plan and retained incredible composure. When Chinnor once again conceded an additional ten metres at a penalty for back chat in their own half. Joe Barratt stepped up and slotted the final three points of the game.

Huge congratulations to the squad, not just the playing twenty two but the other six players who came along to help in the warm-up and support from the touchline. A real squad achievement and one which they and the many supporting families and friends will remember for a long while.
