Henley Regatta Day 3 – Thursday’s Thrilling Racing

Thursday saw some thrilling racing on the water with the a new record broken in Race 15 the Junior W8+ (Prince Phillip) by the Winter Park crew from USA in a time of 7 mins 13 secs beating Hinksey Sculling School by 2 1/2 lengths.

In the late races last night (Wednesday) saw Shiplake College in Princess Elizabeth (JM8+) in a close race, narrowly beating USA crew, Deerfield Academy by 1 length. Upper Thames R.C. cruised through to beat Curlew R.C. by 3½ Lengths in the M4- and their W8+ ‘B’ crew narrowly beat Nottingham R.C. by 1/2 a length.

Today (Thursday), the first Leander race saw the winners of the Henley Women’s Regatta’s Doubles of  Vwaire Obukohwo from Leander Club with K George from Twickenham RC win their first round of the Stonor beating Lewis and Barnes from Greenbank Falmouth RC by 3 3/4 lengths.   Rebecca Wilde of Leander Club with Katie Mole from Birmingham also go through their heat in the Stonor beating De Ruiter & Leeuwenburgh, of the Netherlands by 1¾ lengths.

Leander continued to have a good Thursday beating the Netherlandd team in the Prince of Wales (M4x) by 2 lengths, the W8+ in the Wargrave beating Agecroft by 4 1/2 lengths and the women’s pair of Juliette Perry & Amelia Standing beat the Danish crew of Schanze & Pedersen by 2 lengths.

In the Town (W4-) with a composite crew of University of London & Leander Club they beat Strathclyde Park R.C & Aberdeen Schools R.A. in 1¼ lengths.

In the opening round of the Royal (W1x) Matilda Hodkins Byrne from Upper Thames RC nearly caused an upset but narrowly lost to Cara Grzeskowiak from Canberra Rowing Club by 1 length.  The race was close throughout with the lead changing hands 3/4 times.

Shiplake College ‘A’ beat Nereid B.C., USA in their second round of the Jubilee (JW4x).  They got a really good start and had clear water from the end of the island and dominated the race, winning it ‘Easily’.

Two local crews went out today, Leander B in the JM4x (Fawley) with Hinksey Sculling School ‘A’ beating them narrowly by ¾ length and in the Wargrave Challenge (W8+)  Thames R.C. ’B’ defeated Upper Thames R.C. ‘A’ again narrowly by ¾ length.

7.10 Prince Phillip (Junior W8+) Henley RC v Shrewsbury School

7.30 Princess Grace (Open W4x) Leander ‘B’ v Reading University
