Invitation to Annual Picnic to Celebrate Twinning With Bled

The British Slovene Society would like to invite Henley residents to join them for their Annual Picnic this Sunday (9 July) beside the new kozolec (Slovene hayrack) on Gillotts Field which was given by the Society to support the twinning of our town with Bled in Slovenia.

It will be the Society’s 30th anniversary this year so to help celebrate folklore singers and dancers from Bled in Slovenia will create a true veselica (village feast). Accompanying them are Deputy Mayor Iztok Pesrl and former Mayor Janez Fajfar. Formed in 1981, the Bled Folklore Group brings to life the old traditions of the villages and countryside around the beautiful little town of Bled known for its lake and mountains. They perform traditional dances, accompanied by musicians on accordion, clarinet, violin and double bass. At home, they enliven festivities at the time of harvests and Christmas.

The picnic will start at 12 noon with the music performance starting in the early afternoon.

Marcus Ferrar, Trustee of the British Slovene Society said, “The visit by the Bled folklore group breathes new life into the twinning between Henley and one of the most beautiful places in Slovenia. Last year, the British-Slovene Society erected a typical Slovenian hayrack on Gillotts Field. This makes a beautiful setting for encounters between Slovenians and the people of Henley. All are welcome to the picnic, dancing and singing. Bring good cheer, and some food and drink to share.”
