Winning Week in Friendly Matches for Bowling Club

Henley visited Trentham on Wednesday last week in a five mixed triples friendly match, winning by the margin of 120-48. Colin Ward with Sally Daniells and Nigel Bridges won by the greatest margin of 20 shots. They were 10 up after nine ends and a further 10 up over the remaining ends, finishing with a score of 24-4. Peter Borsberry with Kevin Browne and Angelika Crisa won by a margin of 19 shots. Although they were evenly matched 7-7 after nine ends, they raced to a winning score of 28-9 over the remaining nine ends. Simon Hatcher, with Norman Daniells and Joan Edwards, was 5-5 after five ends but then pulled away to 7 up after thirteen ends. They then picked up a 5 and a 4 on the following ends to win 24-10. Andy Scott with Peter Watkins and Brian Duddy were evenly matched at 10-10 after nine ends then pulled away to win 26-13. Kevin Currill with Barrie Davies and Romy Painter were 4 down after four ends, then 2 up after six ends. However, from there they increased their lead to win 18-12.

On Thursday evening the Henley Club’s patron, the Mayor visited for a fun game of bowls with her councillors. The councillors were organised into teams and played against each other rather than club members for around 2 hours before everyone sat down for a fish & chip supper. Although the evening stayed dry, the wind was too chilly to sit outside and the club set up the tables and chairs indoors.

Saturday’s away match against Wargrave was called off due to bad weather.

On Sunday (23 July), Henley entertained Three Mile Cross in a five mixed triples friendly match, winning on four of the five rinks with a score of 113-80. Norman Daniells with Barrie Davies and Joan Edwards had the highest winning rink. They were 11-8 up after six ends but then picked up five ends of 4 shots each and finished with an overall score of 34-18. Peter Borsberry with Martin Cranstoun and Trish Jones scored heavily at the start, were 13 up after three ends, fell away to just 4 up after twelve ends but hung on to win 22-19. Dave Wilson with Frank Powell and Angelika Crisa started slowly and were 1 down after thirteen ends. After fifteen ends they were 5 down and although they picked up 5 over the final ends, they lost by 1 shot, 16-17. Kevin Currill with Jeanie Davies and Richard Kingston were 1 down after two ends, picked up a 3 on the next end, then took control winning 19-9.
