Maddi Sharkey, the director and producer behind the sell out all female comedy shows, This Show Does Not Contain Nuts which has toured all over the UK, decided it was time to perform her own solo comedy show at The Kenton last Wednesday evening.
Entering the stage wearing a glamorous fringed black body suit and gold high heels, Maddi started her set by being a DJ spinning dance tunes which certainly got the party started. After which she landed her first joke, “Well that’s all the money spent!” She then invited members of the audience who answered yes to random questions including “Who’s got their Christmas tree up or who spent half term in Dubai?” to join her for a drink with the miniature vodka in the goody bag she’d given everyone.
The show included funny very relatable stories about Maddi’s job as an Club 18-30 rep, having her babies, NCT classes, social media posting, navigating her children’s school’s parent portals, her fear of flying and her daughter’s pet pig she bought off Gumtree! We particularly loved the story about the NCT class who informed her that all she needed to deliver a baby was a Swiss ball and to take 2 paracetamols! The classic social media posts projected on the stage backdrop – gym selfies, aeroplane holiday picture etc got a hilarious blasting from Maddi.
Despite Victoria Wood being one of her inspirations along with Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders, Maddi told the audience she can’t play the piano or sing.
With clever props (no spoilers here) Maddi grew in confidence as the show continued, with her returning after the interval dressed in a comfy sweatshirt and joggers the second half saw her relax more and her observation stories which kept on coming and leaving the audience wanting more. The show entitled NUTS, certainly was nut cracking-ly funny.
Afterwards Maddi said, “After 10 years of producing and presenting comedy shows I decided it was my time to step out solo for my own comedy show. The show was massively well received with fantastic reviews, I couldn’t have asked for more. I hope to tour the show around the UK starting in early 2024.”
