Golf Captains Raise £18K for Prostate Cancer UK

The 2023/24 Henley Golf Club Captains Maddy Field & Matthew Davis chose Prostate Cancer UK as their charity for the year because as well as affecting lots of men, it hits just as hard to their wives, daughters, mothers and friends.

So they set out to raise funds and just as importantly raise awareness of the need for all men to get regularly checked up.

The Charity Golf Day in May was a sell-out, members generosity in providing auction items, and then bidding against each other to secure the lots made the day a great success. The cause struck a chord, and many members made private donations, several dedicated golfing and other sponsored challenges further swelling the fund. All the officers of the club with reserved parking spaces even allowed anyone to use their spot if they were away….for a donation!

It was an unfortunate coincidence that shortly before the Men’s Dinner the guest speaker BBC Sport anchor man, Steve Rider announced that he had just undergone treatment for prostate cancer himself. As well as many highly amusing stories from his 23 Masters coverages, he was able to link back to his recent health issues and the Club’s chosen charity, very poignant for him and all of those present.

At the final event of their year Matthew was delighted to present to Charlie Sherritt of Prostate Cancer UK a cheque for a magnificent £18029.90
