Walk of Fame Idea Put to Council
Resident Michael Hodges spoke to the Recreation & Amenities Committee of Henley Town Council on Tuesday evening about his idea to create a ‘Walk of Fame’ to celebrate notable residents past and present that would attract visitors to the town.
Michael said, “This is essentially a strategy to help generate additional footfall in the town as well as honouring and celebrating those who have made Henley famous for their contributions in different ways. The idea was prompted by our country’s success in the past and at recent Olympics and the pivotal part played by Henley based athletes. Having worked in the past with Steve Redgrave, James Cracknell and Matthew Pinsent, I’m profoundly aware of the value they played and all our athletes generate. By promoting the sporting stars of Henley plus visiting monarchs of the past, local celebrities, writers, film and music stars and so on Henley can generate additional visibility, awareness, income, brand value creating a memorial experience and thus encouraging others to visit.”
Michael suggested the five-point star brass plaques be installed in the pavement in Market Place which could be funded by sponsorship and the Council could promote the ‘Walk of Fame’ through their website and a leaflet available at tourist information centre. He also suggested that a trail could be developed for other stars elsewhere in the town and having a QR code at each star which could link to further information on the Council’s website. Schools could be encouraged to take the trail to find out interesting facts about the people who have stars.
Michael concluded by saying: “This is just an overview of the idea I have and I hope you find it of interest as a starting point. I suggest that give it serious consideration for development in the interest of the town and our community.”
It was agreed that Michael should discuss his idea with the Town Centre Manager, Paul Carey and bring a proper proposal back to the Council which can then be considered by Councillors
