A team of 13 from Workbooks, a CRM software company, based in Earley have signed up to take on the The Chiltern Centre 5 day trek to summit Mount Toubkal in Morrocco in June.
The trek will see the team climb the highest mountain in the Atlas Mountains, walking for three solid days and climbing 4,167m to the top. They hope to raise £10,000 for the charity who provide respite care for disabled young people.
John Cheney, CEO at Workbooks said, “Henley is my home town, so when Cheryl asked me if Workbooks would be interested in supporting the Chiltern Centre – I was keen to support a local charity. For us, the Trek is a win in multiple ways. Firstly everyone is busy training, so we are all getting fitter. Its proving to be a great team building experience for the company and lastly and most importantly we are raising funds for a great cause.”
Jean Hardie-Matthews added, “I’ve always walked in places like the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales and the Highlands and have completed some walks that were challenging. However, nothing on the scale of Mount Toubkal so I thought, why not give it a go, especially with the spin off benefit of raising money for a wonderful charity, which is only 3 minutes from where I live? I’m feeling excited and daunted in equal measure. My knees (along with the rest of me) are the oldest ones going on the trip and I don’t want to hold anyone back. I also have a fear of heights so I’ll be trying to look straight ahead at all times!”
Cheryl Purver, Community Fundraiser at The Chiltern Centre said, “I’ve had the pleasure of knowing John Cheney for some time, but when we first sat down to explore how Workbooks could support The Chiltern Centre, I never imagined it would lead to us standing just seven weeks away from climbing a mountain together as a team. When John asked if I’d present this fundraising expedition to his management board, I was thrilled. The idea of combining fundraising with team building, fitness, and stepping outside the day-to-day business environment clearly resonated—and the enthusiasm from the team has been incredible. The benefits are already being felt, not only by the individuals involved but by the wider business too.”
“We now have 13 committed fundraisers, most of whom are completely new to trekking, taking on this challenge with a collective target of £10,000. With the drive and passion they’ve already shown, I’m confident they’ll surpass their own expectations.”
“I’ll be joining them on what I’m calling ‘Toubkal Take 2’, and I hope this signals the beginning of a new wave of corporate adventure—where growth, wellbeing, and purpose, things that are so important to The Chiltern Centre, come together in boardrooms and beyond.”
