All 3 squash teams enjoy a winning week
Henley 1st Team had a tight encounter at Defence Academy, with three of the individual matches going to five games. Fighting 3-2 wins for Harry Palfreyman (looking good after a long-term injury) and club coach Adam Edge, plus a comfortable 3-0 win for Richard Brown, allowed Henley to edge it; and captain Harry Carr added two points with a close-fought loss (2-11, 11-5, 10-12, 11-9, 7-11). With one match to go in the Summer season, this result leaves Henley 1sts looking safe in 3rd place of the division 1 table – especially with 4th-place Abingdon losing (actually their 4th loss in a row). Last match next week is a home fixture against Harwell.
This week’s match: Defence Academy 1 v Henley 1 (on 28/7/26)
1. Harry Carr (2-3 loss)
2. Sam Carr (0-3 loss)
3. Harry Palfreyman (3-2 win)
4. Adam Edge (3-2 win)
5. Richard Brown (3-0 win)
Henley 2nd Team did their chances of winning the division 3 title a power of good by beating top-of-the-table University 3rds. They got off to a great start with wins for captain John Williams and James Rowson and Dan Andrews looking good at 14-10 in his first game against Leah Begian. Leah’s game was based on never-say-die retrieving and a very low error count, and this enabled her to take the first game 16-14 and eventually run out 3-1 winner, despite Dan fighting back to take the 3rd game. Next up for Henley was new boy Will Walker who turned in a fine fighting performance to go down 11-15, 13-15, 11-15. Will also did more than his fair share of work on the night, marking two matches. Thanks Will, and welcome to Henley Squash Club. This left the overall match poised at 2-2 with Paul Ski to play at 1st string. Paul’s powerful play was too much for his opponent who, despite fighting for every rally, looked drained at the end. Paul won 15-12, 15-8, 15-10, giving Henley the overall victory. Henley are now 23 points adrift of University3 in the divisional table, with a game in hand. So they need to win their last regular season match (next week away at Hithercroft) and then win their postponed fixture against University4 (to be played on 12th August) and have University3 lose their last match against Gladiators. Could be just the odd point in it!
This week’s match: Henley 2 v University 3 (on 28/7/26)
1. Paul Ski (3-0 win)
2. John Williams (3-0 win)
3. Dan Andrews (1-3 loss)
4. Will Walker (0-3 loss)
5. James Rowson (3-0 win)
Henley 3rd Team maintained their top spot in Berkshire division 6 with a comprehensive 20-0 win over Royal Berks. All the Henley players won 3-0 without being too troubled by their opponents. They next play away at Caversham on 12th August, which is a clash with the 2nds’ rearranged match (see above),
